It can’t have escaped your attention, but it’s Halloween! And what better way to celebrate it than to countdown the top 10 scariest WWE Superstars of the last 10 years or so. This is the first part, numbers 10 to 6. Check back tomorrow for the second part, numbers 5 to 1.

10. Mordecai

Mordecai

Mordecai

So, remember Mordecai? No? Well, no one blames you. But cast your mind back to April 2004. You were watching Smackdown when suddenly a promo started, featuring albino-looking man promising to “rid the world of its sins”. Remember? That was the first appearance of number 10 in our list, Mordecai.

Said to be the brainchild of Vince McMahon, the character of Mordecai officially debuted at the WWE Judgment Day PPV back in May 2004, defeating Scotty 2 Hotty. Following this, he began to appear on Smackdown, often condemning the audience for their sins and giving them a moment to pray.

Sadly Mordecai didn’t get much of chance to rid the world of its sins, as he was sent back to OVW in July, just two months after his debut. Shame.

And the man behind Mordecai, Kevin Fertig, didn’t really have much more success than his character. Although Fertig was initially released just a few months after re-joining OVW, he returned to the WWE as the character “Thorn” and predominately wrestled in the ECW brand. However, history repeated itself when Fertig was sent to OVW once again back in November 2007. And that’s where he stayed until 2009, when he left the WWE. He can now be found wrestling on the independent circuit.

9. Viscera

Viscera

Viscera

Viscera began life as Mabel and it wasn’t until 1999 we saw him don the black body suit and bleach the Mohawk. But whatever he called himself and whatever he wore, this was one scary guy and comes in at number 9 on our countdown.

Viscera was initially a key part of the Ministry of Darkness, acting as their enforcer. But once the ministry disbanded, this monster ended up floating around the mid-cards and was released from the WWE in 2000.

However, he rejoined the WWE in 2004. Even scarier than his appearance, though, due to his storyline involving Trish Stratus, Viscera was later dubbed “The World’s Largest Love Machine”. But Viscera stayed around the mid-cards once again, mainly making appearances on WWE Heat before joining the ECW brand and being rebranded as “Big Daddy V”. He left WWE again in 2008.

Viscera, real name Nelson Frazier now wrestles for All Japan Pro Wrestling as “Big Daddy Voodoo” – and still looks just as big and scary.

8. Goldust

Goldust

Goldust

Perhaps more freaky than scary, Goldust makes it to number 8 on our countdown.

Goldust  as we know him first appeared back in 1995. Best known for intimidating opponents by being flirtatious and groping them now and again, Goldust had moderate success winning the intercontinental championship on numerous occasions before parting ways with the WWF to join WCW in 1999.

After WCW was bought out by the WWE in 2001, Goldust returned to television, reappearing at the Royal Rumble in 2002. He remained in the WWE until 2003 and during this time managed to capture the Hardcore Championship seven times and the won Tag Team Championship with Booker T. This odd pairing also managed to provide some of the funniest moments ever in the history of the WWE – just do a search on YouTube and you’ll see what we mean.

It wasn’t until 2005 we saw Goldust again, and that was just for under a year as he left again in 2006.

But he returned – for good this time – back in 2008, initially appearing on RAW, but transferring over to the ECW brand and then to Smackdown. Nowadays, Goldust has a more “backstage” role, but can often be seen on WWE NXT.

7. Gangrel

Gangrel

Gangrel

Triple H spits water, Gangrel spat blood. The first “vampire” to appear in the WWE, Gangrel makes it to number 7.

Gangrel first appeared on our television screens in 1998. He later went on to form “The Brood”, a faction with Edge and Christian. However, once the “totally reeking of awesomeness” pair left the faction, Gangrel became a singles wrestler, although never really made it out of the mid-card.

He was officially released in 2001, but made the odd appearance in the WWE from 2004 to 2007, including taking part in a 15 man battle royal on the RAW 15th Anniversary show.

These days Gangrel, or David Heath as he’s known without the fangs, wrestles on the independent circuit and makes porn movies. Nice.

6. Doink the Clown

Doink the Clown

Doink the Clown

Everybody is afraid of clowns, right? Therefore, Doink the Clown comes in at number 6.

Personally, it’s the fact that this character has been used in the WWE as recently as last year that scares us more than the green wig and garish make-up.

First appearing in 1992, and played by Matt Osbourne, Doink would play cruel jokes on both opponents and fans alike. Osbourne left the WWF in 1994 and wrestled as the Doink character for a while in ECW, before eventually appearing as himself. An angle was set up in ECW, where Shane Douglas would criticise Vince McMahon for turning Osbourne into a cartoon character and never fully realising his potential as a wrestler.

Nevertheless, Doink the Clown lived on, having since been played by countless wrestlers around the world and in the WWE, including Nick Dinsmore, better known as WWE’s Eugene – he sure does get the best parts, doesn’t he?

Who knows when we’ll see Doink in the WWE again, but let’s hope it’s not too soon.
